“Hai mươi năm sống trong lòng địch, vừa nuôi chồng trong tù, vừa nuôi dạy 9 người con ăn học khôn lớn, đến nay tất cả đều phương trưởng. Bà Như bảo, những năm tù đầy gian khổ ác liệt, bà không sợ, nhưng sau ngày hòa bình bà lại hoang mang lo sợ. Bởi chồng bà, ông Lê Hữu Thúy, người ra tù vào tội, chịu mọi cực hình tra tấn vẫn một lòng trung thành, tận tâm làm việc cho cách mạng.

Nhưng cơ quan lại cho ông về nghỉ việc sớm, không còn đảng viên, không chế độ chính sách, ông phải về nuôi heo, nuôi thỏ để kiếm sống. Mãi đến năm 1990, tức 15 năm sau, ông mới được “xét lại”, được phục hồi đảng tịch, được thăng cấp từ Thượng úy lên Đại tá. Và đặc biệt, ông được Đảng và Nhà nước tuyên dương là Anh hùng lực lượng vũ trang nhân dân. Hôm đi dự lễ đón nhận danh hiệu Anh hùng, ông đưa bà cùng đi. Ông bà rất cảm động, cười mà nước mắt cứ ràn ra.

Bà Nguyễn Thị Nhẫn, bà Phạm Thị Kim Chi cũng trong tâm trạng buồn vui lẫn lộn. Năm 1975, sau ngày miền Nam giải phóng, bà Nhẫn cùng chồng (ông Vũ Ngọc Nhạ) về thăm làng Cọi Khê, nơi chôn nhau cắt rốn của ông bà. Thấy đoàn xe về làng, dân trong thôn xóm kéo ra rất đông. Khi ông bà Nhạ từ trên xe bước xuống, cả làng ngớ ra. Họ không ngờ một gia đình đi theo giặc mà họ đã từng căm thù nguyền rủa, thì nay lại được Đảng, Quân đội trịnh trọng đưa về làng thăm quê hương. Sau chuyến đó, dân làng mới hiểu: thì ra trong những năm tháng mọi người coi khinh, lên án ông Nhạ, bà Nhẫn là những kẻ bất lương theo giặc, thì chính những năm tháng này ông bà lại phải cam chịu bao nhiêu cay đắng, khổ sở ở bên kia chiến tuyến. Cuộc hội ngộ hôm ấy, dân làng Cọi Khê không ai cầm nổi nước mắt.

Chúng tôi tới thăm gia đình ông Vũ Ngọc Nhạ ở quận 3, TP Hồ Chí Minh đầu năm 2001. Ông đã ở tuổi ngoài 70, vẫn hoạt bát, tinh thông. Nhìn ông bình dị, phúc hậu, chúng tôi không thể tưởng ông đã từng trải qua gần một nửa thế kỷ gian khổ đối mặt với bao khó khăn thử thách và đã hoàn thành nhiệm vụ một cách thần kỳ. Ông vẫn nhẹ nhàng, cẩn trọng niềm nở tiếp mọi người…

Vinh quang từ những chiến công, độc đáo của ông, của đồng đội ông trong lưới A22 nhiều người vẫn nhớ. Ai cũng nghĩ ông đã mãn nguyện với niềm vui, với sự cống hiến to lớn của mình cho cách mạng, cho đất nước. Nào ngờ có những điều xót xa, trăn trở từ đáy lòng ông những năm sau này đã mấy ai hay! Hình như ông cố nén chịu, vì ông hiểu sự “bạc mệnh” của những người làm nghề tình báo, thời nào cũng thế. Một số người vẫn nghi hoặc ông, bảo ông ăn ở hai lòng. Nghi là ông thông đồng với đối phương. “Không ngả theo chúng làm sao ông ta tồn tại được trong hang hùm suốt ba đời Tổng thống ngụy”.

Mỗi lần nghe vậy, ông chỉ lặng im và cắn răng cam chịu. Biết bày tỏ lòng mình với ai đây? Bao năm chiến tranh ông đã vượt qua trăm ngàn thử thách nghiệt ngã, vậy mà những năm hòa bình có lúc ông đã không vượt qua. Một người con của ông cho chúng tôi biết: có lần ông đã định uống thuốc… để đi theo đồng đội, nhưng không thành. Có lẽ, vì dằn vặt, nghĩ ngợi nhiều, con bệnh quái ác phát ra ngày càng trầm nặng. Cuối năm 2002, anh bộ đội Thiếu tướng tình báo Vũ Ngọc Nhạ đã vĩnh viễn ra đi!

Cuộc đời những người chiến sỹ làm tình báo nghiệt ngã là thế. Những người vợ, người thân của họ cũng chung hoàn cảnh như vậy. Vinh quang, cay đắng, công trạng và hận thù luôn song hành tồn tại trong họ. Vượt qua nó không thể ngày một, ngày hai, mà có khi phải đánh đổi bằng cả đời người.

Những năm ác liệt nhất, anh em tôi vào Sài Gòn nhưng mỗi đứa mỗi nơi, mỗi người một nhiệm vụ.

…Anh Tư Hùng là người gan dạ, trung thực, tôi tự hào về anh tôi. Tuy nhiên, âm mưu của kẻ địch rất thâm độc, hòng ly gián giữa anh Tư Hùng với tổ chức, chúng tung hoả mù là Tư Hùng có đi lại với CIA, nên mất một thời gian để chứng minh, cộng với việc có thời gian anh Tư Hùng ở Quân đội, thời gian ở Công an nên thành tích của anh chưa được đánh giá hết. Giờ đây, Đảng và Nhà nước ta đã thấy hết công lao của anh Tư Hùng và truy tặng anh danh hiệu Anh hùng lực lượng vũ trang nhân dân là niềm tự hào của gia đình chúng tôi…”.
